To be honest, as a follower of Jesus, I cannot dismiss, as fluke, the truth and wisdom I've heard outside church walls simply because the words did not flow from the mouths of Christians. To be honest, as a follower of Jesus, I cannot dismiss, as fluke, the truth and wisdom I've heard outside church walls simply because the words did not flow from the mouths of Christians. How can one miss the beauty and humor embedded in H. L. Mencken's caustic observation: "The cosmos is a gigantic flywheel making 10,000 revolutions a minute. Man is a sick fly taking a dizzy ride on it. Religion is the theory that the wheel was designed and set spinning to give him the ride." There is universal truth in this unrepentant atheist's thoughts. God did set the cosmos in motion. Sin did make us sick flies. If I focus on the material, am I not dizzy? My willingness to forego any impulse to beat on this atheist like a drum or rebuke him, as if he were Satan and all his demons rolled into one, allows me to more fully understand God's Word. I gather from Jesus' teachings this is a good thing. This provocative collection of worldly beliefs, observations, thoughts and sayings will not hurl you to the floor in uncontrollable laughter, but may be amusing enough to bring a quiet smile, especially when the light dawns that believers and non-believers have far more in common than ever imagined. Who knows, if our Christian hearts grow genuinely compassionate towards those who do not exactly believe as we believe, Christians may become the light to the world we were designed to be?
