Maria King Carroll was born and raised in Peoria, Illinois, where she continues to live with her husband John and their son Luke. Having grown up across the street from Bradley University, where her father worked, she had no interest in going there and graduated from the University of Wisconsin-Madison with a B.A. in History and Philosophy. She later saw the error in her thinking and went on to earn two Master's Degrees from Bradley in Human Development Counseling and English. Maria has worked as a foster care and adoption worker, counselor, communications coordinator, freelance writer, academic advisor, and English instructor. She is currently the coordinator of Haitian Hearts, an organization founded by John that brings children from Haiti to the United States for heart surgery and other medical care. She also does a lot of volunteer work at St. Mark's School, where she and John at- tended and where Luke is in junior high. She has blogs at www.livefromhaiti.blogspot.com and www.bouncingball.org. Maria is the favorite child of her father's--along with her four siblings (five-way tie for first!)
