Autorenporträt
Joris-Karl Huysmans (1848-1907) naît dans une famille d'artistes. Son père, lithographe, meurt alors que Huysmans n'a que huit ans. Huysmans passe une grande partie de sa vie au ministère de l'intérieur. Il fait paraître en 1874 son premier recueil de poésie ("Le Drageoir aux épices"), et rencontre Zola deux ans après. Il défend son nouvel ami dans un article sur l'"Assommoir" et le naturalisme. Il publie la même année un roman naturaliste, "Marthe, histoire d'une fille". Son second roman ("Les Soeurs Vatard", 1879) est accompagné d'une dédicace à Zola. Il fréquente aussi Maupassant, et réalise avec quelques auteurs un recueil de nouvelles ("Les Soirées de Médan", 1880). À compter de 1884, avec la sortie de son roman "A rebours", Huysmans se montre de plus en plus pessimiste, et s'éloigne du mouvement naturaliste. Après avoir traversé une phase mystique avec "Là-bas" (1891), Huysmans se convertit soudainement au catholicisme.
