Ernst Renan (1823-1892) was a French philosopher, historian, and linguist. He is perhaps most famous for 'The Life of Jesus' (French ed. 1870). He is the author of numerous other works, including 'The Apostles,' 'Studies of Religious History and Criticism,' 'The History of the Origins of Christianity' (7 vols.), and 'The History of the People of Israel' (5 vols.).
