Manny Silva is a 26 year old unemployed construction worker turned actor-writer who receives a letter from a publishing company stating that they want to publish his first novel. The catch in the deal is the fact that he must drive a rented truck from Massachusetts to San Francisco to deliver sourdough bread-making kits to the publishing house's parent company, Sourdough Sam's Inc. Manny accepts the deal and begins the trip which is the first of many adventures Manny will encounter over the next nine months of his life. When Manny arrives in San Francisco he first has to fight off the sexual advances of the homosexual manager of Sourdough Sam's, Mury Nestor. He then is asked to help in a half million dollar cocaine deal in order to publish his book and to save the ailing breadmaking kit company. He accepts the assignment in order to insure the publishing of his novel and is led into several more adventures including one in which he meets a beautiful liberated business-woman who he falls tremendously in love with. As the cocaine deal and romance progress, Manny begins to experience some strange occurrences in the psychic field and even begins to perform automatic writing. The writing is prophetic and seems to tell Manny that the circumstances he is involved with are good and could eventually lead to saving the world from some future cataclysm. Unfortunately, the drug deal gets busted and Manny is left high and dry in San Francisco. Eventually, Manny moves in with the liberated business woman, Iris, who can't stand the manager of Sourdough Sam's and is now the lover of Manny. The three unlikely companions, Manny, Iris and Mury now form a company of their own and begin several more adventures until the female partner double-crosses Manny and Mury and steals the company out from under them. As the adventures of Manny are happening, the reader is also seeing the extreme adventures the world is going through as the comet Kohoutek is making its way across the universe. As the comet makes its way past the earth and out into space, Manny's adventures begin to dissipate and he makes his way back to Massachusetts.
