Sustainability is one of the most important topics of our time. Because of their social impact, companies bear a large responsibility for the sustainable development of global society. In order to implement sustainability in companies, the qualification of graduates of business administration in sustainability management is of fundamental importance. Many universities have committed themselves to anchoring sustainability-relevant educational objectives in the curricula of their study programms. Appropriate competence assessments can be used to demonstrate that the educational objectives have been achieved. However, competence diagnostics in the higher education faces numerous challenges, one of which is the development of reliable and valid assessments. In the context of validation of test instruments, the cognitive processes that take place in subjects during test item processing are often not yet sufficiently taken into account. In the present study, the cognitive processes of students of business administration during the processing of simulation-based test items for corporate sustainability management are therefore analyzed.
