JAY L. HALIO is Professor of English at the University of Delaware. He is the author of more than 20 books, editions, and collections of essays, not only on Shakespeare and his contemporaries, but also on modern American and British literature. His many publications on Shakespeare include folio and quarto editions of King Lear for the New Cambridge Shakespeare, an edition of The Merchant of Venice for the New Oxford Shakespeare, scholarly books on Shakespeare in performance, and numerous articles in journals such as Shakespeare Quarterly and Shakespeare Bulletin.
