Frank Lawrence Owsley (1890-1956) taught at Auburn, Birmingham-Southern, and then at Vanderbilt for 29 years before becoming the first incumbent of the Hugo Friedman Chair in Southern History at The University of Alabama in 1949. His other works include States Rights in the Confederacy and Plain Folk of the Old South. Howard Jones is University Research Professor in the Department of History, University of Alabama. Among his numerous books are Mutiny on the Amistad: The Saga of a Slave RevoltandIts Impact on American Abolition, Law and Diplomacy; To the Webster-Ashburton Treaty: A Study in Anglo-American Relations, 1783-1843; Abraham Lincoln and a New Birth of Freedom: The Union and Slavery in the Diplomacy of the Civil War; and Union in Peril: The Crisis Over British Intervention in the Civil War.
