Founded in 1890, the Ipswich Historical Society operates two historic museums--the 1677 Whipple House and 1800 Heard House--offers a variety of educational programs for all ages, and maintains an outstanding collection of paintings, furniture, personal items, rare books, and manuscripts. William M. Varrell, a trustee of the Ipswich Historical Society, generously contributes his vast knowledge of local history and extant photograph collections to publications and lectures.
