A major area of interest in integrated CAD/CAM is in the design and manufacture of sculptured surfaces. Sculptured surfaces have free form and nonanalytical contours. For this reason, the manufacture of sculptured surfaces has always presented difficulties to manufacturing engineers. A major area of interest in integrated CAD/CAM is in the design and manufacture of sculptured surfaces. Sculptured surfaces have free form and nonanalytical contours. For this reason, the manufacture of sculptured surfaces has always presented difficulties to manufacturing engineers. This work describes general methods of automatic reconstruction of surfaces from their 3D data sets. The main objective of this work is to make contributions towards the construction of an integrated CAD/CAM/CMM system for sculptured surfaces by suggesting and developing adopted methods in the areas: 1. Preprocessing of 3D data set. 2. Mathematical representation of sculptured surfaces. 3. Postprocessing of 3D data set. 4. The achievement of geometric analysis techniques. 5. The process of simulation and verification of CNC tool path. 6. The accomplishment of CNC tool path planning. 7. Computer-based tool engagement analysis. The effectiveness of adopted and proposed methods was demonstrated through computer verification and experimentation.
