O Sr. Banhela completou a sua licenciatura em ciências biomédicas na Universidade de KwaZulu-Natal. Depois disso, inscreveu-se para um diploma de honra na disciplina de fisiologia humana. Foi membro activo da organização internacional sem fins lucrativos chamada SIFE-UKZN (agora Enactus-UKZN). fez parte de um projecto clínico de investigação rural chamado VIBE youth clinic.
