Autorenporträt
John Wesley Powell (1834 - 1902) wurde in New York geboren und studierte am Illinois Institute. Früh entwickelte er ein Interesse an Geologie und Botanik. Bevor er 1869 seine bedeutendste Expedition zum Colorado River und dem Grand Canyon antrat, unternahm er bereits eine Reihe von Forschungsreisen, u. a. durch das Mississippi-Flusssystem und in die Rocky Mountains. Er studierte desweiteren die Sprachen und Kulturen der westamerikanischen Ureinwohner, hatte seit 1865 einen Lehrstuhl in Geologie inne, war Direktor des Bundesamts für Völkerkunde und Gründungsmitglied der National Geographic Society. Powell starb 1902 in Haven, Maine.
