The book covers the incidence of Escherichia coli in a fishing harbour and surrounding waterbodies in a coastal town, Ponnnai, Kerala, South India. It is an original research work done by the first author Dr. Zubair A A under the the guidance of Dr. S.Sureshkumar in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the award of the degree of Doctor of Philosophy by University of Calicut. During the study, a total of 106 E. coli isolates were obtained from 390 samples collected from the study area.Maximum incidence of E. coli was found during the Monsoon season in all the three water bodies. The maximum incidence of E.coli was observed in water followed by sediment. There is a negative correlation between pH, temperature, TDS, salinity and count of E. coli in estuaries. However, the correlation between DO and the level of E. coli was found to be positive. Serotyping of the E.coli revealed the presence of pathogenic groups. Altogether, 16 (15%) isolates showed Multiple Antibiotic Resistanceand 16 patterns of resistance were obtained. The E.coli were classified in to various phylogenetic groups and some isolates found to posses virulent genes characteristic of uropathogenic strains.
