Waghalter came to the attention of Joseph Joachim, the great violinist and close friend of Johannes Brahms. With the support of Joachim, Waghalter was admitted into the Berlin Akademie der Künste, where he studied composition and conducting under the direction of Friedrich Gernsheim.
