Legend and myth provide the symbols and inspiration to guide the human spirit forward. It has always been so. Icarus and the Wing Builder recreates the legend of humankind's first flight, recasting it as a soaring tale of Bronze Age historical fiction. High school mythology class was never like this! Telling the story from the father's perspective, this new book is an epic tale of love and betrayal, freedom and slavery, and coming of age on the Minoan sailing ships of the ancient Aegean. Daedalus, the builder of the wings, was probably the original geek. Like so many today, he must choose between a successful career as a builder of stone and wood, and becoming a creator of wings. There's archetypal power in their shared biographies. Why shouldn't middle age be a time for becoming more of who we really are? This is a story of hope for our troubled times. Find out what really happened in the sky that day!
Autorenporträt
Robert has always been fascinated with the goddesses, heroes and gods of Greek mythology, and especially the very human legend of Icarus. As a young reader, the author remembers a picture-book image of the helpless youth, feathers flying everywhere, falling through an endless expanse of deep blue sky. Even then, he understood that there had to be more to the story. Dropping out of college in the early 1970's, Bob traveled to the eastern Mediterranean for the first time, drawn to the land and its cultures, the beauty and the turmoil. Returning to the USA, his journey led back to college, marriage and fatherhood. Through it all, the fires of the ancient legends still smoldered. He studied the geology of the Aegean, the history of the Minoan people and the legend of Atlantis. After his children had grown into their own lives, Robert discovered community theater, Toastmasters and an inner creative writer that was tired of waiting. Drawing inspiration from the legend of Daedalus and Icarus, and their first flight, Robert's first book, Daedalus Rising, was published in 2008. Now, the journey continues with the publication of "Icarus and the Wing Builder." It is the first volume of a trilogy of historical fiction about the rise of the ancient Minoan civilization and its fall, in the wake of the cataclysmic volcanic eruption of the island of Santorini, and the destructive tsunamis that followed. Robert lives in Colorado, with his wife and their two Boston Terriers.
