Tigran Konstantinovich Mkrtychev was born in 1959 in Tver. While studying at the Tashkent State University, he began working at the Institute of Art History (Tashkent), under the supervision of L.I. Rempel. In 1985, he was hired by the State Museum of the East (Moscow). Here, he went from a senior researcher to the director of the branch - the Museum of the Roerichs. His research interests range from the ancient Buddhist art of Central Asia to contemporary visual arts; he is the author of monographs, albums, scientific and popular articles. Mkrtychev acted as a curator of numerous exhibitions and museum expositions; led various archaeological expeditions; was the organizer of various scientific events, and is an honored worker of the culture of the Russian Federation. In the summer of 2019, he became the director of the State Museum of Fine Arts named after I.V. Savitsky.
