The first comprehensive multimedia training manual for stem cell education and research The first resource of its kind, Human Stem Cell Technology and Biology presents laboratory techniques and protocols that have proven to be effective for the culture of pluripotent stem cells, as well as current perspectives in the field. Edited by a team of professionals at the forefront of discovery and innovation in stem cell research, education, and development of infrastructure, this authoritative multimedia training manual distinguishes itself by integrating readily accessible text, electronic, and video components to explain the biology, technology, and applications of human embryonic stem cells. The first section of the text begins with an overview of the research that established the foundation for current initiatives in stem cell research; it goes on to describe the best methods for researching and obtaining pluripotent cell lines. The second section provides the skills and techniques necessary for the culture, maintenance, and characterization of pluripotent stem cells. This section has been developed as a multimedia stem cell course in order to present the most comprehensive instruction possible. The third section presents an in-depth perspective on the current status of the stem cell research field, and the fourth section explores applications, describing the most recent advances in research and the interface with gene therapy, tissue engineering, and drug testing. Features of this one-of-a-kind reference include: * Introductory chapters that provide background information to scientists entering the field * State-of-the-art, contemporary perspectives written by international leaders in the field * Printable laboratory protocols in PDF form, accessible on the book's Web site * Online updates of the rapidly developing strategies and research protocols that support stem cell research Human Stem Cell Technology and Biology is an invaluable reference and laboratory manual for both experienced investigators pursuing stem cell and induced pluripotent stem cell research as well as those new to this field. Whether it is used to design a laboratory curriculum, workshop, or training course, or simply to assist in performing research in stem cell biology, this volume is a must-have resource of protocols, information, and perspectives for professional laboratories, colleges, universities, and vocational schools.
