While in the countries of the North, this notion, which rhymes strongly with democracy, enjoys almost absolute recognition by States, in Africa, and particularly in Côte d'Ivoire, it's worth taking a look at the lives of these new players who are trying to make their way in a space where debates are highly politicized. The CSO "springtime" that took place during the multiparty era in the 90s made a major contribution to the emergence of a more diversified civil society in the country. Unfortunately, this dynamic seems to have stalled, despite the fact that CSOs are expected to play an active role in the country's democratic balance.

Oscar T. GAGUY is a doctoral student at the Unesco Chair for the Culture of Peace at the Université Félix Houphoüet Boigny. He also holds a Master's degree in Private Law, Judicial Professions and a Master II in Humanitarian Action and Sustainable Development. He is Administrative Secretary of the Convention de la Société Civile Ivoirienne (CSCI).
