„How To End A Love Story“ ist ein sehr emotionaler Einzelroman von der Autorin von Yulin Kuang.
Helen Zhang ist Bestsellerautorin und trifft bei der Arbeit an der TV-Adaption eines von ihren Jugendromanen, Grant Shepard wieder. Sie beiden verbindet der traumatische Tod von Helens Schwester, doch nun müssen sie zusammenarbeiten und gemeinsam über ihre Erlebnisse hinwegkommen. Dies gestaltet sich schwieriger als angenommen. Können sie 13 Jahre nach dem Unglück wirklich zusammenfinden und Frieden mit der Vergangenheit schließen?
Zum einen ist das Buch völlig anders, als ich es erwartet habe. Ich bin von einer lockeren und leichten Romance Komödie ausgegangen und dieser Roman ist dies auf keinen Fall. Das Thema Tod, Suizid und Trauerbewältigung beherrscht die Handlung des Buches. Sehr viel Humor hat das Buch auch nicht wirklich, wie aber angepriesen wurde und einige humorvolle Abschnitte gab es vielleicht, wenn es um die TV-Adaption ging.
Die Handlung lebt eigentlich nur von den Gefühlen von Grant und Helen und die nicht aufgearbeiteten Emotionen zu dem Suizid der Schwester. Doch genau hier liegt das Problem, durch die Erzählperspektive in der dritten Person habe ich keinen Zugang zu den Charakteren erhalten und empfand deren Verhalten teils auch als sonderbar und merkwürdig, im besten Fall als nicht authentisch. Zudem kamen auch die kulturellen Unterschiede und die sehr vorurteilshafte emotionslose Beziehung von Helen zu ihren chinesischen Eltern, die nicht direkt erklärt wurde, aber ebenso zu Reibungspunkten in der Handlung geführt hat. Wie diesen Punkt, hätte ich mir viel mehr Erklärungen gewünscht und vor allem auch Einblicke in die tatsächlichen Gefühle und Gedanken von den Charakteren.
Der Erzählstil hat vermutlich verhindert, dass ich überhaupt Zugang zu den Charakteren erhalten konnte, dies ist bei einen so harten Thema allerdings sehr wichtig. Daher kam mir alles sehr platt vor und wirkte nicht sehr authentisch, besonders auch die anbahnende Liebesgeschichte konnte mich leider überhaupt nicht abholen.
Meine harten Worte sind für die Thematik überhaupt nicht angemessen, aber leider hat mir die Umsetzung überhaupt nicht gefallen. Sehr schade, da ich grundsätzlich die Idee sehr interessant finde.

Schicksal und Tradition stellen eine große, verbotene Liebe auf den Prüfstand
Helen Zhang ist bereits Anfang Dreißig, erfolgreiche Autorin und sieht der Verfilmung eines ihrer Bücher entgegen. Das dafür vorgesehene Team am Set in Los Angeles ist einfallsreich und bunt gemischt und plötzlich steht Helen auch Grant Shepard gegenüber, dem Mann, der als Highschool-Student in einen unverzeihlichen Unfall verwickelt war und damit Helens Leben in ihren Grundfesten erschüttert hat.
Das Cover sowie auch die kurze Beschreibung von Emily Henry auf dem Titel deuten auf lockere, lustige Unterhaltung hin. Aber nein, ich finde, Yulin Kuang hat auf subtile und einfühlsame Weise sehr perfekt eingefangen, das unterschiedliche Kulturen auch unterschiedliche Erwartungen an ihre Kinder hegen. Und dass diese Erwartungen manchmal einen großen Zwiespalt der Gefühle auslösen können. Helen hat ihre Schwester verloren, alle Hoffnungen der Eltern lasten nun auf ihr. Um keine Katastrophe in der Familie auszulösen, ist sie sogar bereit, ihrer großen Liebe zu entsagen. Aber trotz quälender und unglücklicher Entscheidungen hat das Schicksal für Helen eine Lösung parat.
Yulin Kuang versteht es, bedrückende, zermürbende Gefühle und große Lebenszweifel ungemein tiefgründig und zutiefst verständlich zu beschreiben und großes Mitgefühl zu wecken. Die Frage nach Schuld schwebt stets im Raum und man erwartet bald nicht mehr, dass diese überwunden werden kann. Die Autorin legt die Zwickmühle, in der ihre Protagonisten stecken, sehr gut offen und man darf die Achterbahn der Gefühle miterleben, der sie ausgesetzt sind.
Ein tiefgründiger, einfühlsamer und bewegender Roman, voller Trauer und Zweifel, aber auch voller Zuversicht und Hoffnung, genau wie das Leben ihn schreiben könnte!

Ich mochte hier das Setting super gerne, eine Buchverfilmung steht an und Helen wird als Autorin dabei sein. Im Writers Room ist aber auch Grant dabei, ein Drehbuchautor. Die beiden kennen und hassen sich aus der Schulzeit, aufgrund von tragischen Umständen.
Wie die beiden miteinander umgehen, sich dabei dann doch irgendwie näher kommen, war echt schön zu lesen.
Ich fand nur die Schuldzuweisung an Grant etwas „zu viel", auch wenn es aus emotionaler Sicht irgendwie verständlich ist.
Hat mir insgesamt echt richtig gut gefallen!

Ich würde gerne einen neuen Buchtitel vorschlagen: How to find my way, denn für mich dreht sich alles in dem Buch darum, seinen eigenen Weg mit Gefühlen, Gedanken und Problemen zu finden. Der eigentliche Titel weckte in mir das Bild, dass die beiden eine Jugendliebe wieder aufnehmen und nicht voneinander loskommen, aber dem ist nicht so.
Helen und Grant haben keine leichte Vergangenheit, als sie Jahre später wieder aufeinander treffen und viele Vorurteile und Gefühle stehen zwischen ihnen. Der Tod der Schwester Michelle fordert beide auf unterschiedliche Weise hinaus und macht ihr Zusammentreffen schwierig. Mit der Zeit nähern die beiden sich jedoch an und die Autorin schafft es viele süße, liebevolle und knisternden Szenen zu beschreiben.
Der Schreibstil ist dabei einzigartig - bislang habe ich kein vergleichbares Buch gelesen, dass der Perspektivwechsel zwischen den beiden Figuren erlaubt und trotzdem aus der 3. Person schreibt. Nach den ersten Kapiteln habe ich mich eingefunden und fand es spannend, gefühlt über den beiden Figuren zu stehen und in ihre Köpfe zu schauen. Erst nach und nach erfährt die LeserInnen von den Päckchen, die sie tragen. An manchen Stelle hätte ich mir noch etwas mehr zu Grant gewünscht, der einen sehr empathischen Sunnyboy verkörpert, obwohl er sich selbst als gar nicht so wertvoll erachtet.
Helen hat hingegen ein Kampf mit sich selbst und ihren Eltern auszufechten. Sie muss herausfinden, wem sie entsprechen möchte. Zum Glück kann sie nach und nach ihre verschlossene, bissige Art ablegen und die wahre Helen zeigen. Daher mein Vorschlag für den alternativen Titel.
Insgesamt habe ich das Buch gerne gelesen und habe es auch in wenigen Tagen durchgelesen - doch leider weckte es keine tiefen Gefühle in mir. Teilweise war ich etwas genervt von Helen und ihrer Abwehrhaltung. Auf der anderen Seite beschreibt das Buch einige schöne, süße Momente, die ich nachfühlen konnte.
