Hotels have become the fulcrum for innovation in architecture and design. For the first time, Hotel Revolution draws together the new concepts of luxury that are germane to 21st century life, exploring the very best recent designs that leave the now diluted concept of the boutique hotel in their wake. The way we use time, space and natural resources is undergoing a revolution that has given birth to genres of hotel design that reflect a modern diversity of needs, approaches and reflections. The compression of city-space has led to the micro hotel, offering the luxury of location and the very best of technology at an affordable price, while the optimal conversion of existing spaces has become a major arena for innovation. The rigours of the city have also led to the rebirth of antidotes: the retreat, the spa and the country house hotel, where the prized luxury is relaxation. Meanwhile, ethical persuasions have given rise to the conscience resort, where designers have sought eco-friendly solutions without curtailing the pursuit of pleasure. The ultimate luxury is perhaps that of surprise, of the unique experience, which has brought out the very best in some of the world's leading architects and designers. Amongst the diversity of new approaches to luxury, the work of designers such as Rashid, Starck, Thun, Foster, Hadid, Chipperfield and GRAFT is united by the innovation of their responses.
