If he thinks that he has gained new light on various passages, let him be content to tell what has come to him here and there. Let him resolutely refrain from making a commentary. Otherwise what is really new and good in his work will be overlaid and hidden, or at least crowded and cramped, by what may be good but cannot be new. I have tried, in this little volume to follow the advice now given.

Lemuel Stoughton Potwin (1832-1907) was a professor at the Western Reserve College and Adelbert College in Ohio, teaching Latin and English Language and Literature. He was Professor Emeritus in 1906 in the English Department.
