Venetta E. Burks Taylor grew up in Edwards, Mississippi. She is the ninth of eleven children born to the late Mr. Steve and Velma Mace Burks. As a child, she witnessed family members make numerous, courageous and admirable decisions. Her grandmother, Mrs. Narsis Burks, who along with her sister, Mrs. Rachael Milton purchased one hundred and sixty-eight (168) acres of land and successfully owned and operated a grocery store; this had a tremendous impact on her. She was further influenced by her first-grade teacher, Mrs. Lula Burks, young Venetta's aunt. Each of her five sisters became educators. Her decision was made very early to become a teacher and a business owner when she grew up. Her brother, Rev. Phillip Burks has been a constant encourager along with her family and Pastor Melvin Womack. She was educated in the Hinds Country, Mississippi public schools and acquired her undergraduate degrees from Utica Junior College and Alcorn State University; her advanced degrees were earned while at Fort Valley State College and The University of Georgia. Early in her career, she decided, "I have chosen well; I love children; teaching them to value learning is my passion." After teaching in the public schools in Georgia for twenty-two years, she retired and later became founder and CEO of Unique Tutoring & Individualized Children's Academy, Inc. in Warner Robins, Georgia. Where she welcomes and provides varied learning opportunities for children (infants to 13 years). For at least a decade, she has invested some time in writing.
