Smith is professor of political science at San Francisco State University and the author of The Encyclopedia of African American Politics, a leading textbook in African American politics, eleven other books, and scores of articles and reviews on American government and African American politics. In 1998 he was presented Howard's Distinguished PHD Alumni Award.
