A definitive book for professional information work, "Practical Information and Documentation Basics" was founded in 1972 by Klaus Laisiepen, Ernst Lutterbeck and Karl-Heinrich Meyer-Uhlenried. Generations of scientists, practitioners, lecturers and students gained information and knowledge from this handbook or passed on their experience as authors. Since the fourth edition in 1997, considerable technical, methodical and organizational changes have been seen in the area of information and documentation as well as in information science. The structure of Practical Information and Documentation Basics reflects the connection between up-to-dateness and continuity: _ In Chapter A â??Grundlegendesâ? (Fundamentals) the theoretical and conceptual basics of this field are explained, and historical and professional developments illustrated. _ In Chapter B â??Methodenâ? (Methods), which deals with the methodical aspects of information work, has been considerably extended. Besides the previous issues such as classification, thesaurus etc., new aspects like knowledge management, cryptography and document management are now treated as well. _ In Chapter C â??Systeme â?? Produkte â?? Dienstleistungenâ? (Systems â?? Products â?? Services) particular fields of specialized information were updated (e.g. the internetâ??s meta information services, systems of database management and technical editing). _ The short descriptions of institutions and enterprises in the world of information (archives, libraries, the book trade, publishers, electronic publishing, media, economic information, medicine, e-commerce etc.) in Chapter D â??Bereiche der Fachinformation und -kommunikationâ? (Areas of Specialized Information and Communication), have also been brought up to date. _ Chapter E â??Information im Kontextâ?? (Information in context) is completely new, giving insights into other scientific disciplines in which the area â??informationâ?? gains an increasingly important role (e.g. computer science, psychology, linguistics, education, business studies, political science, life sciences, philosophy and neurobiology). The first volume with a total of 73 articles is supplemented by volume 2, a glossary of the terminology used in the handbook which also includes an index in English. Here, important terms and concepts in the world of information are defined and described.
