Rhys Jones was born in Cardiff, the son of Gwyneth Margaret (née Jones) and Elwyn, a doctor. Moving with his father's work, he attended Conifers primary school in Midhurst, Sussex, junior school in Epping, Essex and Brentwood School, Essex.
