The microfiche edition of the Greek Biographical Archive (GBA) contains biographical articles from 90 reference books amounting to 148 volumes published between 1677 and 1996. For this Archive biographical entries from encyclopedias, manuals, calendars, almanacs, articles, and from newspapers and journals scattered around the world have been cumulated. Thus quick and easy access is facilitated to a wealth of information, much of which could previously only be found with great effort. The GBA provides a uniquely broad survey of the many areas of Greek life, with biographies of emperors, aristocrats, freedom fighters, patriarchs, metropolitans, clerics, military officers, poets, artists, scientists and merchants â?? both the ruling class and the ordinary people of what was once a great empire have been brought together here. Individuals from Greece, Asia Minor, the Aegean islands and lower Italy for the Byzantine era, and the area of todayâ??s Greece for the following period have been included. In its three volumes the Greek Biographical Index (GBI) offers an alphabetically arranged list of the 73,600 individuals included in the GBA from the 4th century up to the 1980s and thus gives access to the 91,380 biographical articles in the Archive. In addition to the main entries, the GBI contains cross-references that have been completed with biographical dates in order to better facilitate the use of this index. As the GBI is an Index to the Greek Biographical Archive, the user can tell at a glance whether or not any particular individual appears in the Archive, and if so, where the information is to be found. The Index specifies every individualâ??s name with his/her biographical dates and profession. References to the exact locations of the entries in the Greek Biographical Archive plus the abbreviated titles of the biographical sources used are also given. A key to the abbreviations used is provided. Primarily, the Greek Biographical Index serves as a register to the GBA. Thanks to its highly condensed form it greatly aids the search for and selection of individuals listed in the Archive. Furthermore, as a work in its own right, the Index represents a valuable tool for biographical research: information given by the Index allows the immediate identification of the person in question as well as his/her historical period. The Greek Biographical Index provides its user with direct access to the biographical source material; both the original works in printed form and the microfiches of the GBA. It therefore constitutes an essential reference work for anybody interested in the history of Greece and those areas previously a part of the Eastern Roman Empire, whether for private, genealogical or academic purposes.
