Walt Whitman, geboren 1819 in Long Island, arbeitete als Journalist und später Chefredakteur, bis sein Engagement gegen die Sklaverei seine Karriere beendete. 1855 veröffentlichte er unter dem Titel ¿Grashalme¿ einen Gedichtband mit zwölf Gedichten. Entgegen der Kritik und dem finanziellen Misserfolg, dem nur Emersons Enthusiasmus entgegenstand, wuchs die Zahl der aufgenommenen Gedichte von Auflage zu Auflage auf fast 400. 1873 verlor Whitman seine Arbeitsfähigkeit infolge einer Lähmung. Er zog nach Cambden, wo er 1892 starb.
