Charles Williams nasceu em 1886, em Londres. Editor pela Oxford University Press, atuou também como romancista, poeta, crítico literário, historiador e teólogo. Casou-se em 1917 com Florence Conway, com quem teve seu único filho, Michael. Williams faleceu em 1945, poucos dias após o término da Segunda Guerra Mundial.
