This book is a continuation of Volume II, which closed with the news of General Edward Hand taking command of Fort Pitt, which was a welcome assurance to the soldiers and residents of the Western frontier, and follows the conduct of the War through 1778 when General Hand was recalled to the Eastern field. The documents and material include contemporary reports, journals, memoranda, manuscripts, notes, muster rolls, lists of participants, interviews, and more. As with the previous volume, the editors transcribe numerous original documents, and make extensive use of footnotes to provide explanation and sources for further investigation.
