Francis Bacon (1561-1626), englischer Philosoph und Staatsmann, trug mit seinen Schriften maßgeblich zur Begründung des Empirismus bei. Unter seinen zahlreichen juristischen, literarischen und philosophischen Abhandlungen kommt vor allem zwei Werken eine zentrale Bedeutung zu: den in lateinischer Sprache abgefassten Novum organon scientiarum, die als eine Art ,Gründungsdokument neuzeitlicher Methodenforschung gelten können, sowie der Abhandlung De dignitate et augmentis scientiarum, in der er die erste moderne Universalenzyklopädie konzipiert. Nachdem Bacon als Staatsmann unter James I. eine glänzende Karriere gemacht hatte, wurde er der Bestechlichkeit bezichtigt und vom Parlament verbannt. Nach seiner Begnadigung durch den König widmete er sich bis zu seinem Tod ausschließlich der schriftstellerischen Tätigkeit.
