Fluidized beds are used for thermochemical processes such as combustion & gasification due to their high mass, mixing & heat transfer rates. These mechanisms are afffected by the solids flow rate out of the fluidized bed (or solids entrainment rate). The solids entrainment rate is affected by hydrodynamics within the fluidized bed such as the gas-particle & particle-particle interactions. Recent investigations on the hydrodynamics have included the effects of clusters and particle ejection mechanisms. These mechanisms are usually described through correlations, but they may not predict operating conditions accurately, nor are they general enough to be applied to other fluidized beds. This book discusses the reasons for these discrepancies by comparing the model predictions with experimental results from a cold model of a dual fluidized bed gasifier, & integrates recent reviews of particle ejection mechanisms, clusters and other matters into the author's PhD thesis (Uni. of Canterbury, 2012). The contents in this book are useful for researchers and engineers as it provides a better insight of the correlations and the effects of binary mixtures on hydrodynamics in fluidized beds.
