ERNEST SIRLUCK is retired president of the University of Manitoba and a fellow of the Royal Society of Canada. He is the editor of the second volume of The Complete Prose Works of John Milton, and, with others, of Patterns of Literary Criticism. He is also the author of Paradise Lost: A Deliberate Epic.
