PETER RYAN worked as a newspaper columnist, the director of Melbourne University Press and as an officer of the Victorian Supreme Court. He was an intelligence operative behind enemy lines in New Guinea in World War II. He died in late 2015. PETER PIERCE is adjunct professor in the School of Journalism, Australian and Indigenous Studies at Monash University. He edited The Oxford Literary Guide to Australia and is the author of Australian Melodramas: Thomas Keneally's Fiction. His reviews are often published in Australian newspapers.
