If you have non-farming friends, you've probably wondered how a farmer makes a living. Perhaps they're jealous of your golden bronze color in the summer. But they don't know about the hard work and hot weather a farmer endures. Or that farmers are often serious about their farm terminology. It may be hard to understand all the facts and figures about the life of a farmer, but here are some fun facts. When the farming industry began to flourish, large plantations began to rise to financial prosperity, but it took all year round labor to maintain a farm. In Colonial America, a typical day began early, when the farmers would harvest their crops and use every minute of daylight to make as much money as they could. Breakfast for the average farmer would consist of porridge, beer, and hard work. Today, the National Park Service has a national monument honoring homesteading, where you can visit and learn about farm life. Besides raising food, farming teaches kids responsibility. They will be responsible for taking care of plants and animals, and they will need to be fed every day. Not only will they learn to feed and water, but they will also learn to build and fix things. In addition, they'll learn about the importance of food and the importance of healthy diets. This can be valuable for later in life, as well. And of course, they'll learn a lot about the food supply.
