Martha was born in the last years of the Austro-Hungarian Empire. She was a young woman when Hitler marched into Vienna. Her daughter, Ilse, grew up in Detroit. A Harvard graduate with a master's degree from the University of Michigan, she has published medical books, articles, poetry, and a novel.
