Doctoral Thesis / Dissertation from the year 2023 in the subject Engineering - Mechanical Engineering, Anna University (Sri Ramakrishna Institute of Technology), course: Mechanical Engineering, language: English, abstract: The work represented in the thesis was carried out at Sri Ramakrishna Institute of Technology, Coimbatore, India. A laboratory-scale solar pond of hexagonal structure having a volume 0.679m3 was built for the investigation. The experiments were conducted for different arrangements viz., hexagonal pond, (i). with composite salt, E-W side reflector, and triple glass layer, (ii). with composite salt, and triple glass layer, and without E-W side reflector, and (iii). without composite salt, E-W side reflector, and triple glass layer, and the results were recorded. Periodic temperature measurements at different depths were made over a one-year period from January 2020 to December 2020. A theoretical model was also developed to predict the temperature data and the resulting equations were solved following Runge-Kutta method. The predicted values were compared with experimental results which showed good agreement. Further, the sunny area of all layers was numerically calculated to analyse the impact of wall shading. A cost analysis of the ponds was also performed to determine their economic viability.
