The objective of this book is to study the factors affecting the long-standing relations between Ethiopia and Eritrea, dating back to most defining and interacting historical and political scenes. The factors influencing bilateral relations between Ethiopia and Eritrea came from diverse and intertwined sources, ranging from the impacts of the legacies of colonial segregation, assimilation practices, and the power struggle between competing political actors. The book, therefore, intended to study an overarching question: Why did the relationship between Ethiopia and Eritrea evolve from stalemate to preliminary cooperation? The book makes an in-depth discussion of factors limiting the development of the bilateral relations between Ethiopia and Eritrea, especially after 1991. The transition from confrontation to preliminary cooperation is the call of the times and the best way to serve the interests of the two countries and peoples.I made three arguments: the legacies of colonial segregation, the historical scars of assimilation practices and the antagonism existing among the diverging political actors built an impasse that affected bilateral relations.
