The study examines prevailing classroom language teaching situation in Bangladesh in relation to the materials produced centrally by the National Curriculum and Textbook Board, Bangladesh, following Communicative Language Teaching principles. As a prelude it discusses theoretical reinforcements of Communicative Language Teaching (CLT) and considers its classroom procedures. It also explores the major characteristics of communicative materials and evaluates communicative characteristics of the present textbook. The methods adopted for this research are teachers questionnaire survey and interview, students questionnaire survey and interview, and opinions of the language experts. Finally on the basis of the quantitative survey findings, a list of suggestions for improvement of English language teaching has been developed.

Nasrin Pervin teaches English at North South University, Bangladesh. She has an MA in ELT from Nottingham Trent University (NTU), UK, and has presented papers in ASIA TEFL and NELTA conferences in 2010 and 2011. Her areas of interest include Second Language Acquisition (SLA), Learner Autonomy and Action Research on Classroom Teaching.
