Chris Hannan's work has been produced by the Royal Shakespeare Company and by Sir Peter Hall at the Old Vic. The Evil Doers won a Time Out Award and the Charrington London Fringe Best Play Award when first seen at the Bush Theatre, and he was nominated Lloyds Bank Playwright of the Year for Shining Souls in 1996. Five of his plays have premiered at the Traverse Theatre, Edinburgh, including the contemporary classic Elizabeth Gordon Quinn, which was revived by the National Theatre of Scotland in its inaugural 2006 season. His 2010 play for children and families The Three Musketeers and the Princess of Spain won five star reviews in England and a Scottish Critics' CATS Award for Best New Play. The God of Soho, commissioned for Shakespeare's Globe, premiered there in 2011.

His debut novel Missy was awarded the 2009 McKitterick Prize by the Society of Authors
