John Dos Passos es uno de los principales exponentes de la llamada Generación Perdida de escritores estadounidenses. Descendiente de comerciantes portugueses, Dos Passos nació en Chicago en 1896, estudió en Harvard y, durante la Primera Guerra Mundial se unió a un cuerpo de voluntarios en Europa como conductor de ambulancias. Su novela «Manhattan Transfer» (1925) le granjeó su primer gran éxito, y en 1930 publicó la primera parte de la que se convertiría en su obra más destacada, la trilogía «U.S.A.». A lo largo de su carrera literaria, Dos Passos escribió cuarenta y dos novelas, así como poemas, ensayos y obras de teatro. Murió en Baltimore en 1970.
