The introduction to this bilingual critical edition places El nuevo mundo within the ideological context of seventeenth-century theater; suggests 1600 as the date of the play's composition; explains the purpose of allegory; shows the challenges of staging the play; offers a stemma of recent editions; and analyzes the rhyme scheme of the Spanish verse.
Autorenporträt
The Editor and Translator: Robert M. Shannon was Chair of the Department of Foreign Languages and Literatures from 1994-2000 and Associate Professor at Saint Joseph's University in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He is the author of Visions of the New World in the Drama of Lope de Vega, an analysis of three plays by Lope de Vega, as well as articles on the topic of the encounter between the Amerindians and Europeans and on El libro de buen amor. Research for El nuevo mundo was undertaken at the British Library, London, England. Professor Shannon received a Ph.D. in Spanish literature at Bryn Mawr College.
