Due to his career as an officer in the navy travelling the world, he was able to imbue his work with a real authenticity, presented with a mastery of language and narrative rivalled by few others. Other notable works by this author include: "Pêcheur d'Islande" (1886), "Madame Chrysanthème" (1887), and "Ramuntcho" (1897).
