Traditionally Lord Shiva is regarded as the original founder of Yoga. It is believed that this secret divine science of life revealed to enlightened sages in mediation, was first narrated by Lord Shiva to his wife Parvati for the enlistment of humanity. Yoga exercise has become a part and parcel of modern life now. I have a deep love for Yoga and a strong faith in its efficiency. I fully realized the role of physical exercise in keeping our body fit and I can say with full confidence that a living being can't be healthy without it. There are different types of physical exercises in the world, but the Indian System of Yoga exercise is proving far more effective for our physical and psychic health than any other system. We get a lot of inspiration from those who have practical experience in this line. We have read about Shri Morarji Desai that who kept up excellent health without using any medicine for about sixty-five years. The main reason for this was that he had been leading a natural life of simplicity. He had always been very careful about his diet and routine Yogic exercise throughout his life. Such experienced personalities have always been a source of inspiration for practicing Yoga. Around the 6th century, B.C. appeared two massive epics, the Ramayana written by Valmiki, and the Mahabarata written by Vedvyasa containing the Bhagavad Gita is perhaps the best known of all Yogic scriptures. In Shrimad Bhagwat Gita, God incarnated as Lord Krishna instructs the Warrior Arjuna in Yoga specifically in how to achieve liberation by fulfilling one's duties in life. The backbone of Yoga is furnished by Patanjali's Yoga sutras. He was rightly called the father of Yoga, who around 200 B.C., complied, synthesized, modified, systematized, and refined Yoga in a metaphysical whole, grafted on Samkhya philosophy, and laid down eight steps which form the basis on which the whole system of Yoga works. It was indeed the first classical attempt to interpret the subject. These steps in perfect order as they are were formulated on the basis of a psychological understanding of the human mind. Thus Patanjali Yoga Darshan helps the common man to understand Yoga as a whole.
