Dorothy Tillman was 87 years old, a few months from death, when she wrote Eddie Flynn From Brooklyn, a biographical novella based on her father's remarkable childhood. In high school, Dorothy was awarded second prize in a city-wide writing competition. One judge confided that she would have won first prize but the subject - her love for a homosexual boy - was deemed too controversial. Dorothy did not return to writing until retirement. In between she had a career as an actress, worked as a secretary, raising a son and, at age 50, completed a Doctorate degree in Speech Pathology. Retirement afforded Dorothy time to return to her love of story-telling. She found encouragement through a writing group and began publishing short stories in a literary magazine at Medford Leas, a continuing care retirement community where she lived with her husband Don for the last decade of her life. Her one ambition, as her health declined, was to publish the story of her father's childhood before she died. Eddie Flynn From Brooklyn has reached publication one year after Dorothy's death.
