Creative industries provide significant contributions to sustain economic development in both developed and developing countries. The film industry is one of the sub-sectors of the creative industries. Ethiopia is one of the first countries in the continent to experience film as a technology and an art form since its invention hundred years before. Since then the country has gone through different development stages that range from analogue to celluloid to digital.This book examines the Ethiopian film industry, beginning with the period of increased production following the collapse of the country's communist Derg regime in 1991. Focusing on the last three decades, the economic aspects of the movie industry in Ethiopia was analyzed in my work. It is aimed to examine the economic contribution of the film industry in Ethiopia and its potential for the future development of Ethiopia as well as to identify the key challenges that face the film industry not to play a significant role in the development of the Ethiopian economy, along with a way forward.
Autorenporträt
Yirgashewa Teshome is a graduate of Addis Ababa University with a Master's Degree in Regional & Local Development Studies. He is a writer, film producer and has been the Founding Director of the Ethiopian International Film Festival (EARTHOPIAN) for the last 18 years. He has worked on various projects locally and internationally.
