Despite the lifelong struggles of men and women from various backgrounds who have fought the good fight and have gotten into good trouble, the vestiges and shadows of slavery still walk the land. This walk has been facilitated by an upper-caste system determined to hold onto its white privileges at all cost, notwithstanding that this country was built on the free labor of the sweat, blood, and tears of the Black family. This shadow has facilitated the great disparities which, when penetrated by sunlight, shows suspensions, expulsion, arrest, parole, incarceration, and sentencing of the Black student and Black man. This is unprecedented in the annals of history and compares favorably with the statistics during the unjust, immoral period of slavery. This system has caused disparities in health care, home ownership, wealth creation, life span, education, and employment opportunities, maternal mortality, and infant mortality, among others. Despite petition, marches, protests, and demonstrations over generations, the status quo remains steadfast. As Malcolm X said, "I for one believe that if you give people a thorough understanding of what confronts them and the basic causes that produces it, they will create their own program, and when the people create a program, you get action."
