Born in Río de Janeiro, Francisco Tenório Cerqueira Júnior was one of the best-known piano players on the samba-jazz scene. He was a fixture of Copacabana, the cradle of Brazilian music, and a member of Os Cobras, a highly respected instrumental group. At 3:00 a.m. on March 18, 1976, after performing alongside Vinicius de Moraes and Toquinho at the Gran Rex in Buenos Aires, he left the hotel where he was staying to buy cigarettes and medicine but never returned. He was just 34 years old. What happened that night? Tortured by this question, the narrator of They Shot the Piano Player launches an investigation into the fateful circumstances that ended the life of a musician destined to change the course of Brazilian music.

Javier Mariscal (Valencia, 1950) es un ilustrador y diseñador de gran reconocimiento internacional galardonado con el Premio Nacional de Diseño en 1999. Conocido por ser el creador de Cobi, la mascota de los Juegos Olímpicos de Barcelona 92, ha expuesto sus obras en el Centro Georges Pompidou de París, en la «Documenta' de Kassel, el MOMA, el Victoria & Albert Museum, el Philadelphia Museum of Art, el IVAM o el MACBA. Fernando Trueba (Madrid, 1955) es un director de cine, guionista y productor español de fama mundial. Entre sus películas más reconocidas por la crítica se encuentran Belle Époque, con nueve premios Goya y el Óscar a Mejor Película de Habla No Inglesa, y La niña de tus ojos, multipremiada también en la ceremonia de los Goya. En los últimos años, el cineasta ha estrenado El artista y la modelo, La reina de España o El olvido que seremos.
