This work was performed to quantify the total and diffusible hydrogen in metallic materials for providing information based on the susceptibility towards embrittlement. The total hydrogen determined did not exhibit enough information based on embrittlement. Hence diffusible hydrogen was measured to identify hydrogen desorption rates, desorption temperatures and activation energies in traps of differently prepared samples. This work showed the promising way to evaluate the total and diffusible hydrogen contents in metallic materials by setting up proper sample preparation methods, investigating better ways of sample storage, determining conditions that lead to absorption and desorption of hydrogen. The influence of the microstructure alloys and trapping tendencies of hydrogen were also characterised.
Autorenporträt
Atomic hydrogen is picked up during steel production and it causes embrittlement. The internal embrittlement cannot be foreseen, therefore concentrations of diffusible hydrogen work as indicators. TDMS was applied to monitor diffusible hydrogen: concentration, activation energy in traps, desorption rates and temperatures to improve steel quality.
