Developed agriculture needs to find new ways to improve efficiency. One approach is to utilize available information technologies in the form of more intelligent embedded instruments to reduce and target energy inputs in more effective ways than in the past. The advent of autonomous system architectures gives us the opportunity to develop a complete new range of agricultural equipment based on small smart machines that can do the right thing, in the right time in the right way. The use of environmental sensors with embedded instruments in agriculture and precision agriculture applications is becoming more common, although implementation strategies and capital costs prohibit widespread adoption by many in the industry. A communication protocol was also developed to allow many of these devices to be installed simultaneously and for the transmission of collected data and dynamic configuration and reprogramming.
