S. M. Arif Mahmud has obtained his BSS (Hons.) and MSS degrees and doing his Ph.D in anthropology from the University of Dhaka, Bangladesh. He is now an Assistant Professor of the same department and his research areas include urban issues, ethnic community studies, ethnicity, poverty, environment and development.
